Artist's Description
Ranchers in the high desert of Arizona sometimes drag a chain across the ground to strip the land of trees to make it easier to herd cattle. The first plants to return to these devastated areas are the sage even though they do not seem to grow widely anywhere else in the region. This painting shows a sage being whipped about by the nearly constant wind that blows there. The sage is a symbol of rebirth. But rebirth can be a chaotic process. So that's what this painting means to me. I was inspired in doing this work by Georgia O'Keefe, an artist I thought about often when I lived in the Southwest.
About Sheryl Karas
My mother was an artist and my earliest inspiration. We went to galleries and art museums throughout my childhood, and I was encouraged to create art in every medium and genre I was interested in. This Follow Your Heart belief system has led me to continue working in multiple genres throughout my life. Not only that, I know I'm a multi-faceted person. Isn't everyone? I refuse to be stuck in one media or style when I love more than one! So that's what you'll see here: fine art paintings and photography, handmade printmaking and multimedia techniques, digital / graphic art and illustration. My heart is in the fine arts. And that means a lot to me.
