Description
Another in my Desert Grass series, this piece explores the impressions made by little patches of bunch grass in a desert landscape that was mostly bare. The wind would whip that grass around in wild gyrations. Everything gets worn down by the wind, even adobe. Life in the desert can be harsh but the grass persists at least in this bunch grass form.
I've been exploring the use of photography for abstract expressionism and in particular keep returning to the very few plants I was attracted to in the desert as a starting place. I call the pieces in this series "Graffiti Grass" because I've layered either the shadow or light of more than one image of grass over a crumbling adobe wall. It's like street art using the natural effects of sun, shadow and wind instead of paint.
The grass reminded me of the ability to go with the flow and still remain rooted. As I researched more about bunch grass I found out that this variety sends out long runners below ground that connect them with other bunches. They appear to be individuals but in reality they survive by being a strongly interconnected network, a community so to speak, that extends over acres of land. It's a like a huge world of beings surviving by holding hands. They dance with abandon and it made me happy to look at them.
